The Romans version, pointed the Greek hero Ulisses, as having been the founder of the city of Lisbon. Lisbon, when of the arrival of the Romans already was a city with forts and old bows with other peoples of the Mediterranean.

It is likely that the Romans found that way, some Hellenic traces apart of the existence of commercial routes where there would not miss products from Greek colognes. In to the eyes of the Romans, the creation of a “founding myth” with Hellenic roots was also one way to perfectly integrate the city in the “Greco-Roman world”.
When making it, the Romans deliberately moved away the influence from “Barbarous” people as well as the ancient rivals of the same “world”, Phoenicians and Cartages.

It says the legend that Ulisses and its brave soldiers, after won the war of Troy, would have initiated an erratic trip for the Mediterranean, making discoveries and committing new exploits. Between them it is deduced the foundation of Olisipo (Lisbon), that it would have the name to the hero (Ulisses/Olísis/Ulisseia/Olisipo).

Between the Greeks, the city was known as “Olissipo” and “Olissipona”, which the popular etymology associated to Ulisses.
